Structural and Metamorphic History of the Leech River Shear Zone, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

چکیده

The Leech River Shear Zone (LRSZ) on southern Vancouver Island separates the metasedimentary schists of Complex (LRC) from accreted oceanic plateau Siletz-Crescent terrane. juxtaposition these rock units suggests a possible origin as subduction plate boundary but tectonic context LRSZ has yet to be fully established. We present field, microstructural, petrological, and geochronological observations that constrain structural metamorphic history LRSZ. mylonite zone straddles lithologic contact between LRC basalts Foliation orientations, steeply plunging stretching lineation, kinematic indicators all suggest reverse-sinistral motion. Compositions garnet in schist amphibole metabasalt record synkinematic growth at temperature pressure conditions 550°C–570°C 450–490 MPa. These require elevated geotherms are consistent with models position Kula-Farallon Ridge Yellowstone Hotspot region Eocene (∼50 Ma). Detrital zircon U-Pb age distributions for Schist have Paleocene maximum depositional ages similar Upper Nanaimo Group unconformably overlies Wrangellia Our support early deposition trench/slope environment followed by underthrusting underplating. results establish exhumed paleo-plate interface was active during subduction.

Note on Desorption Results of Comox Formation Coals from the Courtenay Area, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

There has been increasing interest in the coalbed methane (CBM) potential in the coalfields of British Columbia and some of this interest has been directed at the Comox Basin on Vancouver Island. The CBM resource of the basin has been estimated by a number of authors using published coal data. Most recently by Ryan (2001) quotes a potential resource of 0.8 tcf. These estimates are indeed estima...

The seasonal cycle in sinking particle # uxes o ! Vancouver Island , British Columbia

We have made year-long observations of sinking particle #uxes with sequential sediment traps moored at a depth of 200 m at three sites proceeding o!shore from Vancouver Island, Canada in water depths of 500}2500 m. Total particle #ux and biogenic silica decreased o!shore as expected in an eastern boundary current regime. No obvious gradient was observed in POC, and CaCO was proportionally great...

NOTES Reproduction of Aquaculture Atlantic Salmon in a Controlled Stream Channel on Vancouver Island, British Columbia

—Sightings and captures of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar that have escaped from aquaculture facilities have become common in coastal British Columbia, Canada. A lack of empirical data has prevented the forecast of what effects may result from the presence of this species in the Pacific Northwest. A first step towards this objective is to evaluate the spawning potential of escaped Atlantic salmon....
